I recently read the book You(2), which opens with a story about a fly slamming itself against a window over and over and over again. The irony of this is that “Across the room, ten steps away, the door is open. Ten seconds of flying time and this small creature could reach the outside world it seeks. With only a fraction of the effort now being wasted, it could be free of this self-imposed trap. The breakthrough possibility is there. It would be so easy.”

While Price Pritchett was writing about the the human condition — our tendency to stick to what we know and just try harder— my mind immediately went to dieting. 

This is literally the story of every dieter’s life—myself included. I’ve tried so many quick fixes and restrictive diets to get my body to where I wanted it. If you’re in my Facebook group, you may have seen me admit to the embarrassment that was the cookie diet. I’ve tried diet drinks, diet pills, clean eating, Weight Watchers, Atkins, South Beach, low fat and countless others throughout the years.

Sometimes I lost weight. Sometimes I didn’t. But I always ended up exactly where I started— hungry, unsatisfied and hating myself. It sure does make dieting seem super appealing, right? #NOPE

It gets even better.

This logic doesn’t just apply to trademarked diets. You can also repeatedly fly your metaphorical wings into the window of calorie counting and exercising and not see results. 

In a world that tells us if we count calories and exercise, we’ll lose weight, there’s only one conclusion we can come to when we do those things and don’t lose weight…

We must not be working hard enough.

So we get back on the hamster wheel and we run a little faster.

We’ve all done this. We’ve restricted calories and worked out super hard for days, weeks, months—some of us even years. But just like the hamster eventually gets tired, so will you. 

We are only human. 

If we keep chasing the same thing, in the same way, we are always going to be tired, frustrated and maybe even fat.

The question now becomes, how do we pull it together enough to change directions and fly through the open door?

If we’re sticking with the analogy of the fly, that sucker is going to need someone to physically guide it in the right direction—and even then, the fly will only make it if it’s willing to accept the guidance.
